Day 1

Arrival in Entebbe

The safari begins with arrival at Entebbe International Airport. After a warm welcome by your Urban Jay Safaris guide, guests are transferred to a comfortable hotel in Kampala or Entebbe. The day is spent relaxing and recovering from the journey, with optional visits to the Entebbe Botanical Gardens or the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre for those eager to start exploring. Dinner and overnight are at Best Western Hotel or a similar property.

Day 2

Pick up from the Hotel and Drive to Murchison Falls National Park

After breakfast, the adventure begins with a drive to Murchison Falls National Park, the largest national park in Uganda. En route, a stop is made at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary for a guided walk to see rhinoceros in their natural habitat. Exit the sanctuary and drive to Masindi town for lunch, then proceed to the park. On arrival, visit the top of the falls before continuing to the lodge for check in, dinner, and overnight stay.

Day 3

Game Drive and Boat Cruise in Murchison Falls

The day starts with an early morning game drive on the northern bank of the Nile, offering sightings of lions, elephants, giraffes, and various antelopes. Early mornings offer strong sightings because animals are most active and predators may still be hunting. After lunch, a boat cruise on the Nile River provides close encounters with hippopotamus, crocodiles, and many bird species. The highlight is the approach to the base of Murchison Falls, where the Nile waters thunder through a narrow gorge. In the evening, before or after dinner, you may head out for a night game drive before returning to the lodge for overnight stay.

Day 4

Murchison Falls to Kibale Forest National Park

After breakfast at the lodge, the journey continues with a drive to Kibale Forest National Park, famous for its primate population. The scenic drive passes through traditional Ugandan villages and lush countryside. Upon arrival, proceed to the lodge and check in for dinner and an overnight stay at Turaco Treetop Lodge.

Day 5

Chimpanzee Tracking in Kibale Forest

An exciting day begins with an early breakfast before heading to the park headquarters for a briefing about the rules and expectations for chimpanzee trekking. Experienced guides then lead you through the forest to observe chimpanzees in their natural environment. The afternoon offers a visit to Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, known for rich biodiversity including numerous bird species and other primates. Dinner and overnight stay are at the lodge.

Day 6

Kibale to Queen Elizabeth National Park

After breakfast, drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park. The route traverses the scenic crater lakes region, with opportunities for stunning photographs. Upon arrival, proceed to the lodge for lunch and a brief rest. In the afternoon, go on a game drive in the park’s northern sector, which offers sightings of elephants, buffaloes, and other wildlife. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 7

Game Drive and Boat Safari in Queen Elizabeth National Park

An early morning game drive in the Kasenyi plains provides excellent chances to see predators like lions and leopards, as well as elephants, buffaloes, antelopes, and other wildlife. After lunch, a boat safari on the Kazinga Channel reveals one of the largest concentrations of hippopotamus in Africa, along with numerous bird species and other wildlife. Return to the lodge for relaxation, dinner, and an overnight stay.

Day 8

Queen Elizabeth to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

After morning breakfast, continue to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to over half of the world’s mountain gorillas. En route, stop at the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, known for tree climbing lions. The drive offers a combination of game viewing and scenic landscapes. Exit the park and drive toward Bwindi with lunch en route, arriving in the late afternoon. Proceed to the lodge for relaxation, dinner, and overnight stay.

Day 9

Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi and Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi

A highlight of the safari is the gorilla trekking experience. With guidance from experienced rangers, guests trek through dense forest to encounter a family of mountain gorillas. The experience of observing these magnificent animals up close is both humbling and exhilarating. You spend one regulated hour with the gorillas before returning to the park headquarters and then to the lodge. After check out, continue to Lake Bunyonyi, known as the place of many little birds. The scenic drive through the Kigezi Highlands offers breathtaking views and a peaceful environment for relaxation after the gorilla trekking day.

Day 10

Morning Canoe Boat Experience and Transfer to Lake Mburo

Wake up, have breakfast, and enjoy a canoe boat experience on Lake Bunyonyi. Take in the serenity of the lake, the cool breezes, the birdlife, and the guide’s stories about the islands and surrounding communities. Return to the hotel, check out by late morning, and transfer to Lake Mburo National Park. Stop in Mbarara town for lunch before continuing to Lake Mburo, where you check in at the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 11

Morning Game Drive and Afternoon Boat Cruise in Lake Mburo

Wake up early, have breakfast, and set out into Lake Mburo National Park for an early game drive, the best time to see wildlife grazing on the savannah grassland. Animals seen in the park may include zebras, giraffes, waterbucks, impalas, Uganda kob, bushbucks, buffaloes, elands, warthogs, and more. After the game drive, return to the hotel for lunch. In the afternoon, take a boat cruise to view the rest of the park from the water, with chances to see hippopotamus, crocodiles, water birds, and other species. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 12

Transfer to Kampala or Entebbe

Wake up and have breakfast as you prepare to set off for Kampala and Entebbe, a journey of about six hours. A stop at the Equator is included so that you can stand in two hemispheres at the same time, take photographs, and have lunch at the stop. Continue to Entebbe, where you are dropped at your hotel or at Entebbe International Airport. This marks the end of the twelve day Grand Uganda Explorer with Urban Jay Safaris.
