About the Reserve
Stone Town is the historic heart of Zanzibar Island and a UNESCO World Heritage Site of outstanding universal value. Its labyrinthine alleyways, carved coral-rag buildings, ornate brass-studded doors, and centuries of layered history reflect the convergence of Omani Arab, Portuguese, Indian, and African cultures that made Zanzibar the most important trading port of the East African coast. It remains a living city of mosques, bazaars, and the famed Forodhani waterfront gardens.
